SWM Activities

Updated: Aug 17

In response to the growing concerns about waste management in the community, the team launched a series of Solid Waste Management (SWM) activities aimed to support environmental responsibility and promoting sustainable practices. These activities were not only intended to serve the immediate needs of clearance and proper disposal but also to foster a sense of environmental stewardship among the residents.

Activities included many hands-on initiatives, such as community gardening, whereby residents were instructed on how to grow green spaces using composted organic waste. This practice beautified this community and offered a practical means for reducing organic waste. Another major activity that went underway was the collection and turnover of PET bottles, another very common plastic waste material. The team wanted to reduce plastic pollution and advance recycling by encouraging members of the community to collect and recycle the bottles.

The other cornerstone of the SWM activities in terms of infrastructure was the establishment of Material Recovery Facilities. Serving as a central sorting and processing hub for different waste streams, these facilities enabled as much of the community's waste stream to be recycled as possible, while minimizing the amount of refuse sent to landfills. To ensure the community remained clean and free from litter, regular clean-up drives were conducted. These events brought residents together, fostering a sense of unity and shared responsibility for maintaining a clean environment. The diverse range of activities under the SWM initiative demonstrated a comprehensive approach to waste management, emphasizing the importance of community involvement and sustainable practices in achieving long-term environmental goals.
